How to Improve Your Internet Speed

So your provider said you should get one speed but your speed is lower. We know that feeling. As a result, we wrote a quick "how to" guide on improving your internet speed.

Step 1 : Test your broadband speed

The easiest way to troubleshoot a slow internet connection is to perform a speed test. An internet speed test will check the upload and download speeds, as well as review the quality of your connection.

The speed test results will provide a benchmark for how well your broadband is performing given the network type (fibre, wireless or copper) and help to identify potential errors in your Wifi setup.

Step 2 : Switch to faster broadband plan

When was the last time you reviewed your broadband plan? Upgrading your connection is an easy and quick option to improve your internet experience - and it can often end up being more cost effective.

Offering speeds of up to 900Mbps, fibre is the best option for high performance internet. If fibre isn’t available in your area, VDSL is the next best option.

Not sure if you can get fibre at your home? You can find out using our broadband fibre checker.

Step 3 : Upgrade your modem router

Just like many other electronic devices, modems need to be upgraded after so many years. Upgrading your modem (also known as a router) every five or so years will ensure it can handle the latest advancements in broadband technology.

When you sign up or switch to a new broadband provider, they will usually supply you with a modem. However, if you’re buying one yourself, be sure to compare the specifications (processor power, memory, frequency bands) to find the best one.

It’s worth investing in a quality modem, as this will provide a better fixed connection in your home.

Step 4 : Improve your home network

If you’re experiencing slow or disrupted internet, it may be a result of where your modem is placed. The location of your modem can have a big impact on your internet experience, as Wifi signals can only travel a limited distance. Certain materials and other electronic devices can also interfere for your connection.

The most ideal place for modems is in a high, central position near other data-hungry devices (like your TV, gaming console or stereo). If you want to further improve the quality of your streaming experience, you can plug these devices directly into your modem using an ethernet cable.

Don’t forget - data travels much faster through ethernet cable than it does through wifi, so whenever possible, connect the device to your modem.

Step 5 : Extend your home network coverage

Do you live in a large home, apartment building or a property with multiple levels? If so, chances are that your modem struggles to transmit the wifi throughout the dwelling. For rooms with weak broadband signals, you’ll need to extend your network through ethernet cables.

Other options for extending your network coverage include using a powerline adapter or installing a wifi extender or a mesh wifi network. The extension method you use will depend on your property obstructions (such as glass and concrete), and you may find both a powerline adapter and wifi extension is required to get around these.

As extending your network coverage can become quite costly, the most ideal option is to simply upgrade your modem - which can easily boost your network strength and range.

Step 6 : Update and upgrade your devices

Whether it’s your phone, computer, television or laptop, the device you use to connect to the internet can have a massive impact on the speed and performance of your internet. Devices that haven’t been upgraded or updated in a long time are likely to perform poorly online.

Updating your phone to the latest software is one way you may be able to improve your broadband experience. You can also check to see if you’re on the latest version of your favourite browser, whether that be Google Chrome, Safari or Firefox.

Step 7 : Choose the best broadband provider

Although it may seem like UK broadband providers all offer the same plans at similar prices, the plans generally offer quite a variation in performance.

All broadband providers make different choices about how their network is structured, and these choices affect their network performance. Decisions about handover, routing, peering and backhaul all contribute to the speed in which your data travels from the local cabinet to your modem.

At Broadband.co.uk, we can help you find the best broadband provider and plan for your household. Just tell us a bit about your internet needs and we will show you the best and fastest broadband deals available.
